Broomball is a sport that is little known, yet played throughout the world. It is a game very similar to hockey in its formation and rules, but also incorporates some soccer strategies. The game is played with special shoes on a rink with nets larger than their hockey counterparts. A player uses a broomball stick (i.e., a shaft with a molded broom-shaped head) to maneuver a ball. Broomball is lots of fun and great exercise. It is also a great way to meet new friends from different local communities. For more information, please visit Broomball Canada.
Broomball is very similar to hockey as it pertains to the general rules of play; the only major differences are the equipment, such as the type of stick used and the footwear worn by players. Finch Youth Broomball accepts new players in all its age categories (U16, U12 and U9) and coaches are happy to teach new players how to play. When making teams, we also ensure each has a mix of veteran players and new players.
The equipment required to play is: a hockey helmet with full-face protection, elbow pads, knee pads, shin pads (or combo knee and shin pads), gloves (hockey or broomball), a jock/jill, broomball shoes, and a broomball stick. Broomball pants (which have built-in padding) can be worn, but splash pants can also be worn as an alternative. A jersey will be given to each player on the first night, but must be returned at the end of the season.
Broomball is a specialized sport, so not all major sports apparel retailers carry broomball equipment. Luckily, Replay Sports (135 Concession St, Russell, ON) and Rookez-Edge (400 Second St W, Cornwall, ON) are both great places to get new or used broomball equipment.
For the U9 players, the season will cost approximately $170/player(2025-26 rate). It will start the week after Thanksgiving and will run until mid-March. For the U12 and U16 players, the seasons will cost $200/player and will start the week of September 20th and will run until mid-March. (Please note: All dates will be confirmed at registration.)
The schedule depends on the player’s age and the number of players that are registered in their age group. Games for all age groups are 50 minutes and are all played at the arena in Finch.
